Local Artists Invited to Submit Ideas for Creek Show 2022!

Waterloo Greenway Announces Open Call for Ideas, Application Opens Next Week

AUSTIN, TX – February 10, 2022 – Coming back bigger and brighter than ever, Waterloo Greenway is thrilled to announce the return of its annual Creek Show November 11-20. Beginning next Tuesday, February 15, local architects, landscape architects, artists, and designers are invited to submit ideas for light-based, site-specific installations in the Creek Show Call for Ideas. Selected teams will be awarded a $20,000 installation commission budget, including artist honorarium, and costs for labor and materials. The deadline to submit proposals is midnight on Friday, March 18.

Creek Show celebrates outstanding design by our local artists and creators while sparking conversation about the transformation of Waterloo Greenway into a series of urban parks and trails around a restored Waller Creek. Through this 10-day event, Waterloo Greenway activates Waller Creek by commissioning innovative installations, surrounded by free entertainment and programming for our entire community to enjoy in partnership with Creek Show founding partner, AIA Austin.

“Creek Show was born out of an idea to surprise and delight Austinites, sparking imaginations about the future of Waterloo Greenway,” said AIA Austin Executive Director and Creek Show Artistic Director Ingrid Spencer. “Last year, we received 40 Creek Show submissions – each year raises the bar – we can’t wait to see what our 2022 artist teams come up with.”

Each year, artists are challenged to explore different Waller Creek-inspired themes in their Creek Show submissions, ranging from environmental stewardship to our community’s rich history. In 2021, Waterloo Greenway celebrated the opening of Waterloo Park with a special edition of Creek Show within the newly renovated 11-acre greenspace, hosting over 50,000 guests, five art installations and nightly concerts.

Creek Show 2022 will continue to delight and inspire the community by activating Waller Creek at creek level once again, between 9th and 12th Streets, to Waterloo Park. Submitted proposals will be reviewed by a committee of local leaders from the design and art community, and selected teams will be announced this spring. Creek Show applications must include:

  • A compelling story about Waller Creek and/or Waterloo Greenway
  • Engaging design for attendees
  • High-spectacle concepts
  • Usage of common materials in uncommon ways
  • Light as an integral element of the installation

Interested teams are encouraged to join two informational sessions where Waterloo Greenway and past Creek Show artists will review project goals, go over the submission process, and provide tips on preparing a successful application.
