Waterloo Greenway Community Programming Returns this Fall

Free Workouts, Children’s Storytime, Fall Festivals at Waterloo Park

Austin, TX — August 14, 2024 – Today Waterloo Greenway Conservancy announces the return of its weekly series of no-cost family-friendly community programs at Waterloo Park this fall, in collaboration with Austin-based organizations, artists, and performers.

Located in the heart of downtown Austin, Waterloo Park is a central hub of activity featuring more than 1.5 miles of scenic trails, thousands of native plants, imaginative playscapes, and the 5,000-capacity Moody Amphitheater. The 11-acre greenspace is a public park, reimagined and rebuilt in partnership with the City of Austin, and is open daily from 5am-10pm for everyone to explore and enjoy.

“The community programming at Waterloo is a standout example of how local businesses can partner with public spaces to conjure the magic of Austin,” said Greg Reintjes, VP of Marketing at LALO Tequila. “We are proud to build a community in our hometown with our partners at Waterloo Greenway.”

Waterloo Greenway is excited to honor these traditions and welcome an ongoing series of special events that enliven our community and celebrate Austin’s artistic diversity and rich culture.

Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, long observed in Mexico and other Latin American countries and communities, is a holiday now embraced globally. Each culture infuses their own unique influences into vibrant festivities that honor the dead. Gather with us as we celebrate both the centuries-old and modern traditions shared from around the world.

Local Tejano florist Jose Arrieta Hinojos (Teocochitl Designs) will transform the Moody Amphitheater stage into a community “ofrenda,” or altar, where visitors are invited to place images and decorations that honor their families and friends who have passed. Guests can also remember beloved departed pets at a special Alebrijes Altar designed by artist Ernest Ramirez (@muertosclothingco). The free nighttime festival will feature free live music and dance performances, a Latinx artisan craft market, themed cocktails, local food vendors, family-friendly hands-on activities, calavera face painting, and more!

CREEK SHOW
Friday, November 8 – Saturday, November 16 at 6pm-10pm

Creek Show is Waterloo Greenway’s most defining signature program and aims to raise awareness and public support for the transformation of Waller Creek into a series of restored urban parks and trails. Since 2014, Waterloo Greenway and AIA Austin have commissioned site-specific work by Austin-based architects, landscape architects, artists, and designers. As part of its 10th anniversary celebration, Waterloo Greenway is reimagining the format of Creek Show to honor a decade of high spectacle creativity, innovation, and community.

PAST DEPOSITS FROM A FUTURE YET TO COME
On Display Nightly | View the Schedule | Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park

Buttons, plates, marbles, bottles, coins, bullets, keys and other historic artifacts are suspended in a rhythmic free fall in a new public video art installation exploring the ways in which these objects connect us to Austin’s past, present, and future, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of people who once lived and worked along the creek in the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries. The installation is free to the public.
