Introducing the Winning Authors of our Creek Monster Writing Competition

Waterloo Greenway believes the future of our community is being cultivated in the minds of our youngest learners. To kick off our educational initiatives this year, we asked AISD and Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) elementary school students to help us tell the tale of our ever-elusive mascot, the Creek Monster. Over 100 students from schools all over Austin submitted their fun and imaginative stories which were reviewed and scored by WG staff and members of our Community Engagement Committee.

Meet Kalea, a 5th Grade student at TSBVI, our 2021 Creek MonSTAR Award winner! Not only did she write a creative tale about the Creek Monster, but she crafted a multi-sensory sculpture to go along with her story!

You can read Kalea’s Creek Monster Origin Story here.

A tremendous thank you to all the students, teachers, and Amplify Austin Day donors who helped make this writing contest a success. All students who submitted stories will receive a specially designed certificate for their participation, and the winners in each grade level have earned a gift card, generously donated by our friends at BookPeople!

We look forward to creating more inspiring learning opportunities for Austin’s youth in the near future!

Congratulations to all the winners from TSBVI and AISD elementary schools!
